HEALTH FUNDS CAN BE UNHEALTHY PART II

Private Health Funds Providing Dentistry

There are many changes in the practice of dentistry today. Many Health Funds are abandoning their original charter of actually insuring patients for the dentistry they have done. Over the past years they have been challenged as profiteering as collectively they have generated profit from Extras insurance of $10 billion over the last 10 years. The CEO of the Private Health Insurance Administrative Council Mr Shaun Gath stated “having ‘extras’ private health insurance doesn’t make financial sense, and people would be better off paying for dental, optical and other general treatments out of their own pocket”.

Many have been advertising practices as “preferred providers” purely on the basis of commercial arrangements rather than their ability to deliver dental services.

Now the Health Funds are arguing amongst themselves by disallowing some of these providers to operate with different Funds. Some will be expanding into their own operations adding further confusion.

Cannon Hill Dental has been established for over 35 years. We have certainly changed over the years but our core service is the delivery of dentistry to the best of our ability. Your dental and general health is too important for blatant commercialisation.
