Our Services

At Cannon Hill Dental we provide a wide range of dental treatments for our patients. Further information on the treatments we provide is below. If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to contact our team.

Preventative Care

Regular examinations and cleans are a great way to prevent dental diseases like decay and gingivitis. At all examination appointments our dentists do a thorough oral cancer screening of your hard and soft tissues, examine your teeth, gums, occlusion (how your teeth come together), jaw position and overall oral health.

Dental X-Rays are usually required every 2 years. These help our dentist to diagnose treatment in areas between your teeth, under any existing restorations and to check your bone levels. We use digital X-Rays in our practice to significantly reduce radiation.

We are strong believers in patient education in a holistic approach. We will take the time to explain any concerns and can give you guidance on your homecare regime. Six monthly clean appointments by your dentist helps to remove plaque and calculus that builds up between your visits with us.

Mouthguards are another preventative strategy to reduce the damage caused by sporting injuries to the mouth. A custom fitted mouthguards can be made for you or your child by taking an impression of the mouth and moulding the material to fit perfectly around your teeth. A variety of colours are available. This process takes approximately one week.

Restorative Care

Restorative care deals with rehabilitating the teeth back to full function and aesthetic appearances. This can involve a combination of different procedures including implants, crowns, bridges, simple restorative fillings, veneers, root canals and denture plates. Involvement of other dental specialists is sometimes required.

Teeth have a number of functions including chewing, aesthetics, speech and keeping facial muscles in the correct position. Tooth replacement is important because when a tooth is lost it can affect one or all of these aspects.

Restorations (fillings) are placed where decay has been removed from a tooth. Composite restorations are tooth coloured and matched to the shade of your tooth. This means you are left with a very natural looking durable restoration.

Implants are the most natural way to replace missing teeth. A titanium implant body is placed into bone to help preserve the bone and it provides a fixed support for a tooth replacement.

Crowns are used to cover over a specially prepared tooth and are utilized to help strengthen heavily filled and weakened or cracked teeth by holding it all together. They are especially important to be placed following a root canal treatment to protect the tooth.

Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth and consist of an artificial tooth permanently attached to two crowns either side of the space.

Root canal treatments involve the removal of the damaged or infected pulp (nerve of the tooth) and replacement of the canal with a sealant and a root filling material. This is required when a tooth is inflammed due to decay or trauma. Some cases may need to be referred to a specialist depending on a number of individual tooth factors. A follow up procedure to place a crown is especially important following root canal treatment to protect the tooth.

Dentures are precision fitting removable false teeth which can be designed to look and feel like nature intended. Partial dentures are utilized where there is support offered from remaining teeth to provide stability. They can be made with a metal frame to keep them minimal and more comfortable. Full dentures rely on gums and muscles to keep them in place.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Aesthetics in dentistry aims to produce a natural looking smile. We can offer a number of procedures to help improve the appearance of your teeth and smile. This can be achieved through a combination of whitening, porcelain crowns, veneers and replacement of amalgam fillings to tooth coloured restorations.

Children's Oral Health

Your child’s teeth are as important as your own and allow your child to chew and speak properly. Early detection of any problems in your child’s mouth is the key to keep your child on the right path to healthy teeth and gums with good habits for life.

To children a first time dental visit can be perceived to be a scary or daunting experience. We aim to provide a positive experience for everyone at our practice, but we take a little extra care when treating children. We think it is especially important to create a fun and friendly environment for children so that they look forward to visiting.

Oral Surgery/Wisdom Teeth

Extraction of teeth is always a last resort in dentistry as teeth provide important functions of chewing and speech. Unfortunately due to decay, trauma or gum disease some teeth require removal to control pain and infection. An extraction will leave a gap which may cause other teeth to shift or move into the gap. It is important that if a tooth is lost that we also think about tooth replacement.

Wisdom teeth are positioned at the back of the mouth and are the last teeth to erupt. Wisdom teeth may need to be removed for a number of reasons, particularly infection causing pain. Referral to a specialist maxillofacial surgeon is sometimes required to remove wisdom teeth. This may be done under a general anaesthetic.

Orthodontic Services

Orthodontics aims to realign your teeth improving their position, appearance and function of crooked teeth. Alignment helps to aid everyday procedures such as brushing and flossing. Orthodontic services are offered to our patients by our visiting orthodontist Dr Julie Creagh from Shine Orthodontics.
